A sweeping historical saga of Australia and a love story of one determined young woman who must choose between the two devoted men she loves.
Eighteen-year-old Hannah Conroy has always dreamed of following in her father's footsteps as a healer. But in 19th-century England, the medical profession is closed to women. She sees midwifery as a back door into that world, but her fledgling career is crushed by personal tragedy. Seeking to escape a possible murder conviction in England, Hannah's world is turned upside down as she boards a boat bound for Melbourne. Young and naïve, with some laboratory notes and a handful of medical instruments, she hopes Australia is a place of a new beginning and a fresh start, a place where she can begin a midwife practice. Arriving during a period of enormous change in Australia, Hannah faces a myriad of challenges. Not only must she fight for acceptance as a medical professional, but she also falls in love with and must decide between two men an American photographer seeking a new life in Australia, and a rowdy outlaw fleeing arrest. This Golden Land presents a love story that neither time nor distance can erase.
This Golden Land (Audible Audio Edition) Barbara Wood Vanessa Labrie LLC Cherry Hill Publishing Books
Very similar to Duminia, same type of heroine, both stuggling in the medical field, one a would be doctor the other a would be midwife, struggle non stop, dusty Australian outback, very long winded and the main male characters very weak and wishy washy. Some of the Australian Aboriginies riutuals the same in fact as described in Duminia seemed a lot of paste ;and print.. Couldn't wait for the book toend which was abrupt and and felt unfinished in fact a damp squib..

This Golden Land (Audible Audio Edition) Barbara Wood Vanessa Labrie LLC Cherry Hill Publishing Books Reviews
I've been reading Barbara Wood's books for decades. I'm constantly amazed at her storytelling prowess. "This Golden Land", her latest, shows that her writing has improved (something I'd find hard to believe could happen, since she's always been so good to begin with!) with time and publication. I loved this book; it had me right from the start and kept me to the last page. I highly recommend it.
I throughly enjoyed this book.
At times, it's like "Now what's going to happen to them?" Too many life-threatening and life-changing episodes. However, it is a good read and very interesting. I did enjoy it.
Every book I've read by Barbara Wood has been so well written, she keeps me so interested and intrigued. This is a must read for anyone who lives Australia and history.
This was my first novel by Barbara Wood. I bought it after seeing the five-star reviews and the price for the hard cover version and I probably expected more than I should had. I am just slightly dissapointed. I finished the book and I kind of liked it. On the other hand the story was little too linear and the chracters bit one-dimensional - either realy good or evil, well with one nice exeption anyway. The book has very grandmotherly feel to it with everything falling to the right place at the right time and with carefully controled political correctness. I liked very much the setting of the story and the early medical issues. There was an occasional editing problem but nothing major or too distracting. I will definitely read some more books by Barbara Wood and probably recomend this one to some friends but I honestly cannot give it five stars.
I would have given this book four stars easily; it was well written and fascinating as I always enjoy Barbara Wood's books. Unfortunately, the editing on this book was atrocious - there were spelling and grammatical mistakes throughout - and I believe that at least one star should be withheld because of this sloppiness.
I'm not sure how eBooks are handled but this is far too often the case where it was much less often a problem when I have read books on paper. This book though, was especially careless, so much so that my enjoyment was severally diminished by this.
Barbara Wood is an amazing author. I didn't think I would ever love a book as much as I have her work of "Domina." This book is a close second. The heroine Hannah is a character that you won't want to leave behind. She sails to Australia in a reaction to the horrible examples of doctors in England who ruin her father by blaming him for the death of a Lady when in fact it was their own act of bleeding that caused her death. She knows as a woman she will never be accepted as a midwife much less a doctor which she has been trained to do. Hannah finds not only love, but a rip roaring adventure. Slowly she is able to win peoples trust and do the work of a healer which she is trained to do. There are very interesting details about the Aborigines and their culture, mining opals and the harshness of the outback which in its own way is beautiful. You will love this book.
